The Society for Phytotherapy was founded on the 17th of November 1971 as a scientific society of physicians, pharmacists, and scientist.
It promotes fundamental pharmaceutical and pharmacological research of medicinal plants and, specifically, clinical research with herbal medicinal products, in the sense of evidence-based medicine. Here in particular is the expert consensus only second to clinical trials as an important instrument in acquiring knowledge.
Since 1987 the Society for Phytotherapy organizes regular scientific congresses on topics related to phytotherapy, partly in cooperation with other scientific societies. Topics were and are the efficacy in the treatment of diseases, the classification within the therapeutic field, preclinical pharmacology (elucidation of modes of action), safety and tolerability as well as questions related to phytopharmaceutical quality. In total more than 20 congresses and symposia have been organized.
